AI Resume Optimisation Guide
Your resume has roughly 7 seconds to survive an ATS scan and another 7 to impress a human. AI can win you both rounds — but only if you use it like a strategist, not a content mill.
Your resume has roughly 7 seconds to survive an ATS scan and another 7 to impress a human. AI can win you both rounds — but only if you use it like a strategist, not a content mill. Here's the exact optimisation workflow that's getting remote applicants to interview rates above 25%.
Step 1: Audit Your Current Resume
Upload your resume to ChatGPT or Claude and run this prompt:
"Act as a senior tech recruiter. Score this resume from 1–10 on: clarity, quantified impact, ATS keyword coverage, and recency relevance. List every weakness with a specific fix."
You'll get an honest mirror — usually painful, always useful.
Step 2: Extract the Job's Keyword DNA
Paste the target job description and ask:
"Pull the 20 most important keywords and skills from this JD. Rank them by frequency and weight. Flag which are must-haves vs. nice-to-haves."
Now you know exactly what the ATS is looking for. Naturally weave the must-haves into your summary, skills section, and bullet points. Aim for ~70–80% keyword match — anything higher reads like stuffing.
Step 3: Rewrite Bullets with Quantified Impact
Replace every bullet that starts with "Responsible for" using this formula:
[Strong verb] + [what you did] + [measurable result] + [scope/scale]
Bad: "Responsible for managing the marketing team."
Good: "Led a 6-person distributed marketing team across 4 timezones, growing organic signups 142% YoY ($1.8M ARR)."
Ask AI: "Rewrite each bullet to lead with impact, include a metric, and stay under 2 lines."
Step 4: Optimise the Summary
The top third of your resume decides everything. Use this prompt:
"Write a 3-line summary for this role, leading with years of experience, top 2 specialties, and one signature accomplishment with a number. Tone: confident, no fluff."
Step 5: ATS Format Check
- Single column, no tables, no text boxes, no graphics.
- Standard fonts (Inter, Calibri, Arial, Georgia).
- Section headers: "Experience", "Skills", "Education" — exact words ATS parsers expect.
- Save as PDF unless the application explicitly asks for .docx.
Run it through Jobscan or Resumeworded for a final compatibility score. Aim for 80+.
Step 6: The Human Layer
After AI does its job, read every line aloud. Does it sound like you, or like a robot impressed by itself? Trim adjectives, cut clichés ("results-driven", "team player", "synergy"), and keep verbs sharp. The best resumes are obviously written by a human who knows their craft.
Step 7: Tailor in Under 5 Minutes Per Job
Save a master resume. For each application, paste the new JD into ChatGPT and ask:
"Here's my master resume and the JD. Adjust the summary and reorder the top 5 bullets to match this role's priorities. Don't invent experience."
That last sentence matters — AI loves to embellish. Always verify.
The Compounding Effect
A tailored resume converts 3–5x better than a generic one. With AI, tailoring stops being a chore and becomes a 5-minute ritual. Multiply that by 30 applications and you've changed the math of your job search entirely.
